Who needs encouragement? ME!
All scripture referenced are from the English Stander Version of the Bible.
Why do people need encouragement? Jesus instructed in John 16:33, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Jesus encourages us by saying (and I paraphrase) in me you will have peace, world is full of trials, but please take heart, I have overcome the world.
When encouragement is absent, people feel unloved, unimportant, useless, forgotten, and the list goes on. Hebrews 3:13 says, “But encourage one another every day, as long as it is called today….”
What below best describes you right now?
- I desire encouragement daily, I’m upset without it.
- I prefer to be the encourager versus the one encouraged.
- I pray daily for God to show me those who need encouragement.
- I rely on the scriptures when I need encouragement.
There is no right or wrong answer; you could be one or all four, or none.
Read Joshua 1:1-9.
Joshua faced some challenges. He lost Moses and God is telling him he is charged with taking the Israelites through the Jordan River. Do you think he was fearful? If it were me, I’d be fearful!
God told Joshua to get up and move on, Moses was gone. Even with the difficult task coming, taking the Ark of the Covenant through the Jordan River, God reminded Joshua that the land was already given to Israel and no one would take it. “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” Joshua 1:5. God reminded Joshua, I was with Moses, I will be with you. I’m not going anywhere.
Aren’t we like Joshua? We need strength and courage just like he did.
“Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. …” “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:,6, 7, 9.
Don’t we have what Joshua had? 1) Confidence in God’s calling on our lives; 2) the wisdom of God’s word found in the Bible; 3) the promise of God’s presence in our lives.
Do you want to encourage others? Here’s how:
- Pray for God to show you who needs encouragement.
- Start today. Practice encouraging others and make it a daily habit. (It takes 21 days to make a habit, good or bad.)
While teaching a line dance class recently, I noticed a handicapped young man who was trying to take the class. It was apparent that the class was more than he could handle. His caregiver always sat outside the door watching. I had not been able to talk to him or his caregiver because he leaves before class is over.
The Holy Spirit nudged me to reach out and see how I could help. I’ve been emailing with his caregiver and offering encouragement and video links to the dances so he can practice at home. Soon I hope to work with this young man before class to teach him the basic steps as well as offer encouragement.
Who can you encourage today?
